Music Therapy

Now serving all ages.

"Music is the medicine of the mind." — John A. Logan

Our goal is to provide the highest quality music therapy services to individuals and their families in and around the Rochester area.  We conduct individual and group music therapy sessions for preschool and school-age students with music therapy as a related service on their Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) and offer classroom group music therapy sessions. In addition, we provide private music therapy services to children and adults, and run music therapy groups in group homes, nursing homes, and other care facilities.

Our goal:

Private Sessions

We provide private music therapy services to individuals of all ages.  Please contact our agency for more information and availability.

School-Based

We provide music therapy as an IEP related service to students who qualify, and we provide classroom-based music therapy and music enrichment groups.  Please contact your school district to inquire about a music therapy assessment.  The referral/assessment process is listed below.

Our Process:

& how to obtain services for someone you know.

    • Who can make a referral: Anyone on a student’s education team can make a referral for a music therapy assessment (teachers, therapists, counselors, and parents).

    • Referral Forms:  Click here to view and print the Music Therapy Referral Checklist and Form. Complete and submit one copy of each to the school district and one to our agency.

    • We will schedule a music therapy assessment upon receiving the pertinent paperwork from the Committee on Special Education (if it’s a district request) for children 3 years old or older, or the parent (if it’s a private request).

  • Our qualified therapists schedule and conduct music therapy assessments upon receiving a referral and appropriate paperwork from a parent, teacher, therapist, the Committee on Preschool Special Education, or the Committee on Special Education.

    • The assessment includes a review of current service reports, parent/teacher/therapist interviews, observations in a non-music setting, and implementation of music in a similar setting.

    • The data collected is compiled and presented in a Music Therapy Assessment Report.

    • Recommendations/Goals/Objectives are provided when there is proof of eligibility.

    • A child under the age of 3 years old can receive services in the home, daycare, or at our center via private pay.

    • A child who is 3 – 5 years old can receive services in the home, daycare, in a pre-school setting, or at our center.

      • The Committee on Preschool Special Education determines the most appropriate setting for services when included on the IEP.

    • An individual who is 5 – 21 years old can receive services in the home, daycare, in school, or at our center.

      • The Committee on Special Education requires services to be provided within the school setting.

    • An individual who is 21 year or older can attend a class or a lesson in the community, the home or at our center.

    • After receiving approval to begin services the assigned therapist will contact the teacher, therapist and/or parent to schedule the approved frequency of sessions.

    • Once our agency receives the IEP documenting music therapy and a start date, or a private contract from the parent, services will begin.

    • Our therapists will complete and provide quarterly and annual reports to document progress, strengths and needs.

    • Our therapists are always open to receiving contacts from parents, teachers and service providers.

    • Our therapists will attend annual meetings to share pertinent information and provide future recommendations.

  • Music has long been a motivator for our multiply disabled non-verbal daughter. She has always enjoyed listening and appreciates the many sounds and forms music takes. Integrating music therapy into her care was a natural and delightful progression for her educational well-being and pleasure. It has become a highlight in her weekly routine. The knowledgeable music therapists with whom we have had the pleasure of working at Harmony Creative Therapy have brought innovative methods of presentation and a variety of instruments and techniques to the sessions that have provided fun stimulation and a further means of communication for our daughter. We have witnessed that through the expertise of those at Harmony Creative Therapy our daughter’s physical demeanor is more relaxed, attention span is increased, she stays on task more often and generates a true desire to attempt to communicate and participate during the session. We are so appreciative of the ongoing pleasure and benefits music therapy has brought her and consider ourselves blessed to have found the dedicated professionals at Harmony Creative Therapy.

  • “Our sixteen year-old daughter, Erin, has been receiving music therapy services since she was in preschool at Happiness House in Geneva. Erin has special needs and thrives when she works with her music therapist; she loves to sing and always looks forward to her music therapy sessions. Erin has worked with several wonderful music therapists since preschool, each one dedicated to meeting Erin’s needs and IEP goals. We witnessed this first-hand in her music therapy sessions over zoom during the school closure this past spring. It was pure joy hearing Erin sing along with [her music therapist]! We, along with Erin’s team of teachers and counselors, continue to advocate for music therapy in Erin’s schedule. It has made a positive difference in her learning and has contributed to her success in school.”

  • “My son has enjoyed Music Therapy. He learns new skills and it keeps him engaged for the 30-minute session. During the shutdown, Music Therapy was the highlight to his week.”

  • “Music therapy has brought so much to our son who continues to develop in many areas with the support of music. We never realized how much music will support overall development. Seeing and hearing our son develop vocalizations, interact with instruments, move to the beat of the music independently, and be so happy and engaged is uplifting for our family.”

  • "Music therapy has been such a blessing for our son Thomas. Not only does his language bloom when he is able to associate his words to songs but his joy blooms as well. There is not a large amount of things that truly bring joy to Thomas, but knowing he will see his music therapist that day changes his entire mood. His language as well changes significantly, he recites entire books or will sing entire songs, compared to the often 1 or 2 word phrases he will use when initiating language. It has been such a joy and privilege to experience music therapy in our lives and we are so grateful for the wonderful team Thomas has been able to benefit from."

  • "Our son with ASD has very limited verbal speech. After practicing conversation through song with [his music therapist], he is initiating and responding to conversation in public situations! As parents who would have done anything to help their son speak, we are so grateful that music therapy has indeed helped him to interact with others, share what he is thinking, and enrich his life by building relationships through verbal speech."

  • "Music therapy has been wonderful for our son! It gets him producing more sounds and brings joy to his day! He loves watching the YouTube videos of his therapist."
